Review of Single Person Discount for Council Tax
Chiltern District Council and South Bucks District Council are about to embark on their regular review of all Single Person Discounts currently awarded, so now is the time to act if you are not sure about your entitlement, or your circumstances have changed. All Councils undertake these reviews on a regular basis.
A Council Tax bill is calculated as if two or more adults are resident in the property. If only one adult (a person over the age of eighteen) occupies a property, then they are entitled to a 25% single person discount.
Councillor Trevor Egleton, South Bucks’ Cabinet Member for Resources said: “The review is being undertaken because we are committed to maintaining as low a Council Tax as possible and have an obligation to ensure that their customers receive the discounts they are entitled to. In addition, technological improvements mean it is easier for potential discrepancies to be highlighted.”
Councillor Fred Wilson, Chiltern’s Cabinet Member for Customer Services said: “We do encourage residents to claim their correct discount entitlement. However, anyone who is falsely claiming a Council Tax discount is not paying their fair share towards local services. It is now a lot easier to identify such people and we urge them to come forward to ensure that their bill correctly reflects their circumstances.”
Taxpayers currently receiving the discount will be contacted over the next few weeks.
