Callum Scott Brown, 42 years, of Dorney Wood Road, Burnham pleaded guilty at Wycombe Magistrates’ Court on 4th April 2012 to dropping litter from his car on Park Lane, Burnham.
The court heard that on 20th August 2011 Mr Brown stopped his car for a time in a lay-by on Park Lane where he discarded a cigarette butt and food wrapping from the car window. He was caught on a hidden camera which was deployed as part of the Waste Partnership for Buckinghamshire’s ‘Illegal Dumping Costs’ campaign against fly-tipping.

The Magistrates fined Mr Brown £300 and ordered him to pay prosecution costs of £1,202. A victim surcharge of £15 was also levied – a total to pay of £1,517.

When interviewed, he admitted that he had deposited the items. He explained that he had been working abroad and had noticed old sandwich packaging in the car which he had not driven for months. Finding it full of maggots, he discarded it from the vehicle immediately and without thinking. He said he did smoke a cigarette in the area, but did not remember discarding the cigarette butt.

South Bucks District Councillor Bill Lidgate, Portfolio Holder for the Environment and Chairman of the Joint Waste Committee says ‘Littering is an extremely anti social, expensive and potentially dangerous offence. Anti social because it looks awful, expensive because the costs run into millions to clear it up, and it’s dangerous for the staff that have to clear it up often alongside busy roads.’

He added, ‘Throwing litter on our roads is an unacceptable way to behave and the level of fine imposed should make litterers think twice in future. South Bucks District Council will continue to actively support the prosecution of those caught littering in our area.’

If a person sees anyone dumping waste illegally in Buckinghamshire, they can report it on the illegal dumping reporting hotline on 0845 330 1856.

Last year more than 8,000 young people took their story in a new direction with National Citizen Service. This year, you can too.

If you’re in year 11, you’ve got a long summer ahead of you. NCS is an opportunity for you to fill it with outdoor adventure, to meet new people from all walks of life and make a real difference to your community. It’s great to put on your CV or college application and you’ll learn new skills that employers and universities will love.

You’ll spend two weeks away from home where you might be mountaineering, or canoeing. And when you get back, you’ll work as a team on a project to improve your community. To celebrate there’ll be a graduation ceremony – and last year 600 lucky graduates also got tickets for an exclusive gig at the O2 Academy.

Groundwork is offering free places to young people in South Bucks on its prestigious ‘Fixers’ programme, funded by Government at £1500 per participant. Further information is available here.

The organisers of a three-county summer garden party to celebrate The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee have revealed how Buckinghamshire residents can be part of this unique event through a public ballot to be drawn next month.

Four thousand guests, will join The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh, at the party to be held near Henley-on-Thames on the afternoon of 25 June. It is being jointly organised by the Lord-Lieutenants of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire as part of The Queen’s UK-wide Diamond Jubilee regional tour.

More than a quarter of the tickets will be available through the public ballot which will be drawn on 9 May by the Lord-Lieutenants of each of the three counties. The ballot is open to adult residents of Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire. Each successful applicant will be allocated a double ticket so they can bring a guest.

They will join guests from all walks of public life including representatives of voluntary organisations and charities, together with civic, community and business leaders.

The ballot closes on 30 April. Successful applicants will be notified by the end of May. Guests are promised a splendid afternoon to remember. A highlight is a river pageant themed around the Thames which celebrates the important role the river has played in the life of the three counties over a thousand years.

Closely associated with the event is a major Jubilee fund-raising appeal for the four Community Foundations in the three counties which exist to strengthen communities and enrich local life by inspiring and supporting philanthropy and charitable giving.
