The Stoke Poges Society

The Rise and Fall of Sir John de Molyns of Stoke Poges - a 14th century Robber Baron

This talk will follow the society's Annual General Meeting, and will be given by Harvey Whittam.

Husband and wife, Robert de Poges and Amecia de Stoke, made the name for the Parish of Stoke Poges.
In 1325, their granddaughter, Egidia married Sir John de Molyns. Sir John was ruthless and unscrupulous acquiring much wealth and Manors. He is considered a Robber Baron.

Suspicion surrounds the murder of Robert de Poges’ son, Peter and grandson, John. The implication was that Sir John was involved. The murders enabled him to inherit the Manor of Stoke Poges, through marriage. He obtained high rank during the reign of Edward III . Sir John obtained a Royal Licence to fortify the Manor buildings in Stoke Poges and Ditton. Also he gained Royal permission to enclose land to form an estate, part of which today forms the Stoke Park estate.

Historical Crimes in Berks & Bucks

The talk will be given by John Oblein who was a serving police officer for 30 years - initially with the British Airports Authority's Constabulary at Heathrow, then the Met' Police. He transferred to Thames Valley in late 1975, working in our area as a Scenes of Crime officer. Following retiring from the post of Constable in 2003, he continued in the role of Crime Prevention Adviser until 2011. Retiring for a second time in 2019 after working in Training Admin at Sulhamstead, he volunteered for the Museum, he considers himself thoroughly Institutionalised after 50 years of public service.

The talk is mainly about the stories relating to exhibits at the museum in Sulhampstead, many of which made the National news at the time. The Museum covers the nearby murder in Denham from the Victorian times, as well as the Great Train Robbery from 1963 in North Bucks. John experienced, and talks about, the Hungerford massacre by Michael Ryan in 1987.
